Primary Industrial Applications
-
Soap & Detergent Manufacturing: Core ingredient in the saponification process to convert fats and oils into soap, industrial cleaners, and surfactant formulations.
-
Water Treatment & pH Control: Neutralizes acidic industrial effluent and drinking water, precipitately removes heavy metals, and regenerates ion-exchange resin beds.
-
Pulp & Paper Processing: Essential agent in the Kraft pulping process for cooking wood chips and bleaching pulp fibers.
-
Industrial Cleaning (CIP): Heavy-duty degreaser and Clean-in-Place (CIP) sanitizer for breweries, dairy plants, food processing equipment, and pipelines.
-
Chemical Synthesis & Refining: Used in alumina production (Bayer Process), biodiesel synthesis, textile mercerization, and petroleum refining.

Safety, Handling & Storage Guidelines
⚠️ HAZCHEM / Class 8 Corrosive Hazard: Sodium Hydroxide causes severe skin burns, permanent eye damage, and tissue breakdown upon contact. Dissolving solid (NaOH) in water generates extreme heat (exothermic reaction) – always add solid caustic slowly to water, never water to solid caustic.
-
Storage Conditions: Store in a cool, dry, well-ventilated area away from acids, light metals (aluminum, zinc, tin), and moisture. Keep packaging tightly sealed; solid caustic rapidly absorbs moisture (H₂O) and carbon dioxide (CO₂) from the air.
-
Incompatible Materials: Reacts violently with strong acids. Reacts with aluminum, zinc, and galvanized steel to release highly flammable hydrogen gas (H₂).
-
Personal Protective Equipment (PPE): Neoprene or PVC long-cuff gloves, full face shield with safety goggles, chemical apron/suit, and rubber boots.
